Bonnet, roof and wing dents without paint

On a large, flat panel any ripple shows from several metres away. That is why bonnets, roofs and wings take more patience than a door: there is bracing underneath, less access and a lot of surface to reflect.

Why is a bonnet or roof dent harder to repair?

Because they are large panels with little curvature and bracing underneath: any imperfection shows from a distance and access from behind is limited.

A door has curvature and the light spreads out; on a flat roof the lamp reflects almost a continuous line and any small unevenness shows. On top of that, bonnets and roofs have structures underneath, braces and cross-members, that stop the rod from resting exactly where it is needed.

So on these panels we combine techniques: long rods through the brace holes, short levers, glue pulling from outside and knockdowns for levelling. The basic method is explained in paintless dent repair.

How do we work on each panel?

On the bonnet we lift the insulation, on the roof we lower the interior lining and on the wings we go through the wheel arch or the headlight opening.

  • Bonnet. We lift the insulation and work between the braces. If the dent sits over one, we pull from outside. Many premium bonnets are aluminium and need heat; see aluminium panels.
  • Roof. We lower part of the interior lining or go in through the rear lights and the interior light. The side rails are almost always pulled.
  • Front wings. We remove the wheel-arch liner or go in through the headlight opening.
  • Rear wings. They are part of the body shell; we go in through the boot, removing the light or the side trim.

Roofs and bonnets are also the panels hit hardest by hail. If that is your case, see hail damage repair.

Paintless repair vs. bonnet replacement: which is worth it?

Quick answer: repairing the bonnet without paint is worth it whenever the paint is intact: the original panel is kept, there is no painting or colour matching and the car is ready in hours.

Will a large roof dent come out perfectly?

In most cases, yes; when the dent has stretched the metal, a very slight ripple visible only under the lamp may remain, and we tell you before starting.

The key factor is whether the metal has stretched. A round dent, even a big one, usually goes back. One with a sharp crease, like the mark a falling branch leaves, may have stretched the panel; then the paintless result may stop at 90-95% and it is better to know beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

What do people ask about bonnet, roof and wing dents?

The questions we get most about large panels.

Can a roof dent be removed without taking the interior apart?

Sometimes, using glue pulling from outside. But usually we lower part of the roof lining to reach from inside, which gives a better result. We remove and refit it without marks.

What if the bonnet dent is right over a brace?

We work through the holes in the brace with thin rods or pull from outside. It is slower, but in most cases it can be done without paint.

How long does a large bonnet dent take?

Between 2 and 5 hours depending on size, depth and whether the bonnet is steel or aluminium. We give you the time with the quote.

Do you repair plastic front wings?

No. Some brands fit composite or plastic front wings, which cannot be dent-repaired. We check with a magnet or gauge before quoting.

What if the car has a panoramic roof?

The glass cannot be repaired, but the metal frame and other panels can. With a panoramic roof the access from inside changes and we take that into account in the quote.

Can you send us a photo of the dent?

We reply with a fixed quote within two working hours, with no obligation.

Take 2 or 3 photos in daylight: one from a distance showing the whole panel and one at an angle where you can see the reflection bend. That is enough for us to tell you whether it can be repaired without paint, how long it takes and what it costs.

Tell us what happened to your car

We reply with your quote by phone or WhatsApp. You can attach up to 3 photos of the dent here or, if you prefer, send everything via WhatsApp.
