Can a dent be removed without paint? How to tell from a photo

Almost always, if the paint is fine. But there are exceptions worth knowing before you take the car anywhere. These are the questions we ask ourselves when a photo of a dent comes in.

How can you tell if a dent can be removed without paint?

It can be removed without paint if three conditions are met: the paint is not cracked or chipped, the panel is metal and the impact has not stretched the metal too far.

Of the three, paint matters most. Modern car paint is flexible and moves with the metal as we push it back; if it is already broken, the crack will still be there even when the dent is gone. If your dent fails any of these conditions, we will tell you when we see the photos.

How can you check yourself whether the paint is intact?

Wash the area, look at it under low-angle light, run a fingertip over it and take a photo at an angle; if you cannot see or feel any cracks, it can most likely be repaired without paint.

  1. Clean the dent area; dust can look like a scratch.
  2. Look at it under low-angle light, for example your phone torch held at a steep angle.
  3. Run your fingertip over it: a crack feels like a tiny step.
  4. Take one photo from a distance and one at an angle, with a straight reflection crossing the dent.
  5. Send them to us on WhatsApp with the make and model.

Which dents can be removed without paint and which cannot?

Door dings, trolley dents, hail and round dents on any metal panel can be removed; dents with broken paint, very sharp creases or on plastic parts cannot.

Possible

  • Car-park door dings, even sharp ones.
  • Hail, even with hundreds of dents.
  • Round dents on bonnets, roofs or wings.
  • Dents on aluminium panels.

Not possible

  • Cracked or chipped paint.
  • Sharp creases with stretched metal.
  • Panels with old filler.
  • Plastic bumpers and trims.

Dent with intact paint vs. damaged paint: what are your options?

Quick answer: with intact paint, paintless dent repair is the best option; with damaged paint the panel has to be painted, although PDR first can reduce the filler needed.

What happens with dents that come out 90%?

When we expect a dent to reach 90-95%, we tell you from the photo beforehand and you decide whether to repair it that way or go for paint.

It happens mostly with creases that have stretched the metal slightly. The result is usually invisible to the naked eye and only shows under the lamp. For many people that is enough, especially if they will keep the car for years; for a car about to be sold or returned to the leasing company, it depends.

The full process is explained in paintless dent repair. If the car is going back to the leasing company, see lease return preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions on this topic

Can a dent with a scratch be removed without paint?

If the scratch is shallow and only affects the lacquer, yes: we take the dent out and then polish. If the scratch reaches the primer, the panel will need a paint touch-up.

Can dents be removed from bumpers?

Not with PDR, because most bumpers are plastic. Some can be reshaped with heat, but that is a different kind of repair.

What if the car has already been resprayed?

It depends on how much. A thin coat of paint can sometimes be worked carefully; with filler underneath, usually not.

Free quote from a photo

Can you send us a photo of the dent?

We reply with a fixed quote within two working hours, with no obligation.

Take 2 or 3 photos in daylight: one from a distance showing the whole panel and one at an angle where you can see the reflection bend. That is enough for us to tell you whether it can be repaired without paint, how long it takes and what it costs.

Tell us what happened to your car

We reply with your quote by phone or WhatsApp. You can attach up to 3 photos of the dent here or, if you prefer, send everything via WhatsApp.
