Hail insurance claims: report, assessment and repair

After a hailstorm, the hard part is usually the paperwork, not the repair. We prepare the dent map and photos the loss adjuster asks for, attend the assessment if needed and repair without paint once the insurer approves.

Which car insurance policies cover hail in Spain?

Fully comprehensive policies and extended third-party policies that include weather events usually cover it; the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros does not.

The Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros covers extraordinary risks such as floods or atypical cyclonic storms, but hail is not on that list. So it all depends on your contract. Look in the policy terms for wording such as "weather events" (fenómenos atmosféricos), "hail damage" or "own damage".

If you have questions about your rights as a policyholder, the Directorate General of Insurance and Pension Funds runs a complaints service and consumer guides.

What are the steps to repair hail damage through insurance?

There are five: photos and initial assessment, opening the claim, loss adjustment, authorisation and paintless repair.

  1. Assessment. Send photos or bring the car and we tell you whether it can be repaired without paint and how many dents there are.
  2. Claim. You report it to your insurer, giving the date of the storm.
  3. Loss adjustment. The adjuster assesses the car; we provide the dent map and photos or meet them at the workshop.
  4. Authorisation. The insurer approves the repair and confirms the agreed amount.
  5. Repair. We repair in 1 to 5 days and hand the car back with before and after photos.

The technical process is explained in hail damage repair, and the blog has a guide on what to do if your car gets hail damage.

Hail repair through insurance vs. paying directly: which is better?

Quick answer: if your policy covers hail and the excess is low, it makes sense to claim; if you have no cover or the damage is minor, paying directly is faster.

What does our dent map include?

It includes the number of dents per panel, size grading, aluminium panels flagged and photos of each panel under the lamp.

  • Dent count on roof, bonnet, tailgate, wings, doors and pillars.
  • Grading by size: small, medium and large.
  • Aluminium panels or difficult access flagged.
  • Photos of each panel with the reflection lamp.
  • Estimated repair time.

If it is a company or lease car, the report also works for the fleet manager; see dealers, leasing and fleets. For any questions, get in touch via our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

What do people ask about hail and insurance?

Our most frequent questions about hail claims in Spain.

Does Spain's Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros cover hail?

No. Hail is not one of the Consorcio's extraordinary risks, so cover depends on your policy: usually fully comprehensive or a policy that includes weather events.

Can I choose where my hail damage is repaired?

It depends on your policy. Many allow free choice of repairer and others use approved workshops. Check the free choice clause or ask your insurer.

How long do I have to report the claim?

Spain's Insurance Contract Act sets a general deadline of seven days from when you become aware of the loss, unless your policy allows longer. It is best to do it as soon as possible.

Do I have to pay an excess?

If your policy has one, yes; you pay the excess and the insurer pays the rest. Your insurer confirms it when you open the claim.

What if my insurance does not cover hail?

We give you a fixed, direct quote. Paintless repair is usually much cheaper than a traditional repair with paint or panel replacement.

Do you prepare a report for the loss adjuster?

Yes: a dent map per panel, with number and size, and photos of each panel under the lamp. Many adjusters use it to assess without travelling.

Can you send us a photo of the dent?

We reply with a fixed quote within two working hours, with no obligation.

Take 2 or 3 photos in daylight: one from a distance showing the whole panel and one at an angle where you can see the reflection bend. That is enough for us to tell you whether it can be repaired without paint, how long it takes and what it costs.

Tell us what happened to your car

We reply with your quote by phone or WhatsApp. You can attach up to 3 photos of the dent here or, if you prefer, send everything via WhatsApp.
